Las Vegas Monorail
The initial,
privately-funded system involved a 0.8 mile, manually
operated shuttle system connecting two major hotels. On
July 15, 2004, the Phase 1
expansion of the system opened to the public, carrying
standing-room-only crowds. This four-mile route along
the east side of the Las Vegas strip, is now more than
tripled its stops, serving seven hotels. Plans are underway for a
substantial Phase 2 expansion of this system by the
Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) to connect the
hotel/resort area with downtown. Lea+Elliott has been a
major participant in the Las Vegas monorail system,
having performed five different contracts for the RTC:
-
In 1997 Lea+Elliott
assisted in the Las Vegas Major Investment Study.
Lea+Elliott's responsibilities included transit
technology assessment, alternative development and
evaluation, and estimation of capital O&M costs.
-
In 1999 Lea+Elliott
further assisted in development of the Monorail
Project Definition and DEIS that included: definition
of the alternatives; review of the system, operations,
and facilities requirements; operational and cost
modeling; and provided overall QA reviews.
-
In 2001-2002
Lea+Elliott was responsible for the systems
engineering portion of the monorail preliminary
engineering work for the Phase 2 extension of the Las
Vegas Monorail (LVM) System.
Also in 2001-2002 Lea+Elliott assisted with the
development of a Maintenance and Storage Facility for
the Phase 2 monorail system.
-
In 2002 Lea+Elliott
was selected as part of a team of technical
consultants to provide project management support
throughout the entire Phase 2 implementation and
commissioning activities. Our responsibilities
included engineering oversight of system designs
including vehicles, propulsion power distribution,
train control, communications, station equipment,
maintenance equipment, and system operations and
maintenance. Lea+Elliott is also responsible for
oversight of system safety and the security of
passengers.
Lea+Elliott will continue
to assist the RTC during the implementation of the
complete Phase 2 monorail system.
