Pittsburgh Light
Rail
Lea+Elliott assisted in the
design of a rail transit extension for the Port
Authority of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, PA. The
extension provides transit service from Gateway Station
to the North Shore via an underwater tunnel and includes
a spur line from Steel Plaza Station to the David
Lawrence Convention Center. Lea+Elliott engineered
signal, communications and fare collection systems and
analyzed procurement alternatives.
Lea+Elliott was a key
participant in the Preliminary Engineering/Final
Environmental Impact Statement phase of a light rail
transit extension for the Port Authority. Following the
completion of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement
phase and the consideration of public comments, the Port
Authority's Board of Directors adopted the Gateway
Alternative as the option to pursue for the
North Connector project. The Gateway Alternative
includes an extension of the downtown light rail system
from Gateway Station to the North Shore via an
underwater tunnel to a terminus point east of the West
End Bridge. This alternative also includes a spur line
from Steel Plaza Station to the new David Lawrence
Convention Center.
Lea+Elliott's scope for
this phase of the project was the Preliminary
Engineering of signal, communications and fare
collection systems and operations control center
modifications to the 30 percent design level. Further,
Lea+Elliott prepared a report addressing alternate
procurement methods and how they would apply to the
project.
