Ft. Lauderdale International Airport / PEV APM and Intermodal Center PD&E Study

Broward County, in its 2020 Vision Plan, outlined a framework for future development at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Port Everglades and transit elements that would promote regional transportation/transit improvements.  The key elements of the 2020 Vision Plan are the Automated People Mover (APM) and an Intermodal Center (IMC). The APM is planned to transport passengers within and between the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades, with connections to regional transportation modes at the IMC.  The APM would improve the level of service to passengers and relieve traffic congestion on the airport and seaport roadways and at terminal curbs. System length is approximately 5 miles (dual lane) of mainline guideway and between 8 to 10 passenger stations.

Lea+Elliott concluded a feasibility study in June 2004 that included concept level technical evaluation of alternatives to identify any “fatal flaws” and a financial feasibility analysis of the viable alternatives.

Lea+Elliott was authorized to advance the APM and IMC project.  The project is being developed based on the Project Development and Environment (PD&E) process in compliance with National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) that is required for publicly funded transit projects. This would maintain project eligibility for federal and state funding.  Project includes simulation as a part of alternative analysis to develop fleet size and costs for the alternative.
